Day by day

These are suggestions, not reservations: nothing here is booked for you. Check opening days and ticket availability for your own dates.

Rome

3 nights Days 1–3 Stay: Monti

  1. Day 1 Arrive in Rome

    Rome · Monti Overnight: Rome

Transfer to your accommodation, leave luggage if the room is not ready, and take a short neighborhood walk. Have an easy meal and an early night. A late arrival simply means skipping the walk.

Planning note: No Borghese Gallery or other fixed museum booking today.

  2. Day 2 Ancient Rome

    Rome · Monti Overnight: Rome

Make the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine your main sightseeing block. Allow roughly 3–4 hours plus entry and rest breaks. Keep the afternoon flexible for lunch and Monti.

    Optional or alternative

    • Underground or arena access is an optional upgrade, not guaranteed standard admission.

Planning note: Choose the ticket scope first.

  3. Day 3 Vatican Museums and a slower afternoon

    Rome · Monti Overnight: Rome

Allow roughly 3–4 hours for the Museums and Sistine Chapel, plus travel and security. After lunch, choose a relaxed walk or a rest.

    Optional or alternative

    • St Peter’s Basilica is optional and requires separate time and access checks.

Planning note: A morning slot does not mean admission before public opening. Check Sunday and holiday closures; swap Days 2 and 3 if needed.

Florence

3 nights Days 4–6 Stay: Centro Storico

  1. Day 4 Train to Florence

Florence · Centro Storico Overnight: Florence

Roma Termini → Firenze Santa Maria Novella
About 1h40, direct high-speed service · Allow 3.5–4.5 hours hotel to hotel

Check out, travel from Roma Termini to Firenze Santa Maria Novella, then leave bags or check in. Spend the afternoon around the Duomo exterior and Piazza della Signoria, without a tight timed reservation.

Planning note: Budget 3.5–4.5 hours hotel to hotel. Typical direct train time is about 1h40 (scheduled services run from about 1h35 to 1h55); the rest is a planning buffer.

  2. Day 5 The David and Florence on foot

Florence · Centro Storico Overnight: Florence

Visit the Accademia in a booked slot, then allow time for lunch and a relaxed center walk. Choose one neighborhood to explore rather than another major museum.

Planning note: Accademia is normally closed Mondays; swap Days 5 and 6 when needed.

  3. Day 6 Duomo or a gentler alternative

Florence · Centro Storico Overnight: Florence

Choose a booked Dome climb if it suits your abilities, followed by a slow afternoon in Oltrarno.

    Optional or alternative

    • Alternatively, choose the cathedral complex at ground level and a riverside walk.

Planning note: The Dome has 463 steps and no lift. A guided tour is optional; verify the pass and timed slot.

Venice

3 nights Days 7–9 Stay: Dorsoduro

  1. Day 7 Train to Venice

    Venice · Dorsoduro Overnight: Venice

Firenze Santa Maria Novella → Venezia Santa Lucia
About 2h15, direct high-speed service · Allow 4–5 hours hotel to hotel

Take a direct train to Venezia Santa Lucia. Walk or take a vaporetto to your hotel, settle in and explore nearby Dorsoduro.

Planning note: Allow 4–5 hours hotel to hotel, including luggage handling. Typical direct rail time is about 2h15; verify your service. Use Venezia Santa Lucia for a stay in historic Venice, rather than ending at Mestre on the mainland.

  2. Day 8 Doge’s Palace and the waterfront

    Venice · Dorsoduro Overnight: Venice

Make Doge’s Palace the main visit, with a long lunch and a waterfront walk afterward. Keep the evening unstructured.

    Optional or alternative

    • Secret Itineraries is an optional specialist tour; check availability and access restrictions before selecting it.
  3. Day 9 St Mark’s and a neighborhood afternoon

    Venice · Dorsoduro Overnight: Venice

Reserve an appropriate Basilica visit, then choose a quiet neighborhood walk or rest.

    Optional or alternative

    • A lagoon-island outing is an alternative plan, not an automatic extra.

Planning note: Check worship-related access and your ticket inclusions. Reserved entry does not remove security checks.

Departure

Day 10 No hotel night

  1. Day 10 Depart from Venice

    Venice Overnight: none

Leave enough time for the hotel-to-airport journey and your airline’s recommended check-in window.

    Optional or alternative

    • A morning walk is optional only if flight timing permits.

Planning note: This version assumes departure from Venice Marco Polo. Rework the transfer for Treviso or another airport.

Transport / practical logistics

Getting between cities and around

Count the whole journey. Train running times are only part of a transfer day. The hotel-to-hotel allowances below are editorial buffers, not timetables.

Book the right stations

Use Venezia Santa Lucia for a stay in historic Venice, rather than ending at Mestre on the mainland. Compare Italo and Trenitalia for your actual dates, and book once your dates and route are settled and the services you want are on sale. High-speed tickets are for a specific departure with a reserved seat and carry the traveler’s name; choose a fare whose change conditions suit you. Fares and availability vary by date and train, so check each operator’s own booking page rather than relying on a general rule.

Airport transfers are separate

  • Arrival: This version assumes Rome Fiumicino. Choose rail or an official taxi and include the onward journey to your hotel. Allow for immigration, baggage and delays before any onward booking.
  • Departure: From Venice Marco Polo, compare bus plus local transport with an airport boat service. Confirm walking time, luggage practicality and the first service if your flight is early. Airport transport is not included in the intercity rail allowance.

Getting around each city

  • Rome: Combine walking with metro, buses or occasional taxis; the Vatican is a separate outing from Monti.
  • Florence: Many central sights can be combined on foot, but luggage, cobbles, heat and mobility needs change the practical distance.
  • Venice: Walking and vaporetti are the main options. Boat services extend beyond a simple Grand Canal crossing. Compare individual tickets with a pass; airport services have separate coverage rules.

A route with less friction

Travel light, plan a station arrival buffer, and leave room for lunch on moving days. Check lift access at hotels and bridge crossings in Venice. If returning home from Rome, add the return journey explicitly; it is not included in these ten days.

No coastal ferry is required. A private water taxi, gondola ride or lagoon excursion is optional and needs its own budget.

What to book, and in what order, is listed under Book these first.

What this does and does not cover

The core-sights allowance covers a self-directed selection centered on the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Accademia, Duomo choice, Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s. Confirm the exact basket and booking fees. Premium guided tours, underground upgrades and private transfers may exceed these allowances.

Excluded: Flights, insurance, shopping, major alcohol spending, private water taxis, gondolas, extra nights and countryside excursions. Any date-specific access charge should be checked separately. Accommodation taxes are a rough allowance, not a statement of municipal rates. Avoid counting taxes twice if included in your hotel quote.

Use the range as a starting point. Replace each allowance with actual quotes before booking. The low scenario requires all categories to land near their lower allowances; popular dates and central hotels can exceed the upper scenario. Arrival and departure each receive a full-day food allowance to leave some flexibility.

This is a fixed illustrative example. The Trip Budget calculator gives its own estimate for the route and choices you enter, so the two will not always match.

These allowances are editorial estimates, not quotes or live prices, built from Voyaren’s researched cost tables (compiled 19 September 2026 from 2025–2026 sources). This itinerary was last reviewed on 9 October 2026.

More about this trip

Why this route works

Arrive in Rome and leave from Venice, if flight options suit. Traveling north avoids returning to your starting city. You have two full sightseeing days in each base, plus lighter arrival and transfer days. No rental car is needed.

Where to stay
  • Rome: Monti. A useful starting point for ancient Rome; check hills, stairs and the exact address.
  • Florence: Centro Storico. Convenient for the main sights; compare nighttime noise and the walk from Firenze S.M.N.
  • Venice: Dorsoduro. A good alternative to the busiest streets around San Marco. Check the nearest vaporetto stop and how many bridges lie on your luggage route.
Seasonal and traveler variations

This is a city-and-culture itinerary, not a countryside tour. Florence is in Tuscany, but the standard plan does not include a rural excursion. With an extra night, add breathing room in Rome or Florence before considering a fourth base.

Dates matter: No departure date is assumed. Reorder sightseeing for closures and ticket availability. Spring and autumn are useful starting points; weather, festivals and prices still vary. Check current schedules and ticket details before booking.

This is the standard 10-day, 9-night example. If your trip is a different length, change the nights in Build My Trip, treat any extra days as a slower pace, and review the day-by-day plan again rather than squeezing these ten days into fewer.

Summer is hot and crowded in all three cities; winter has short days and possible high water in Venice. Closures and ticket rules apply year-round.

  • Honeymoon or special occasion: Upgrade the rooms, drop one sightseeing block per city and keep the open afternoons.
  • With children: Shorten each sightseeing block, add a long midday break, and check child ticket rules and bridge and luggage access in Venice.
  • Value-minded: Choose a budget room band, compare regional trains with high-speed fares and use the free sights between the paid ones.
  • Winter: Days are short and some hours are reduced; Venice can flood in the streets. Plan indoor sights for the middle of the day.
