Who it suits
Couples, friends and solo travelers who want one big city and one relaxed coastal base without hiring a car.
Not ideal if you want to sleep in a cliff town such as Positano or Ravello, or if you dislike a long mid-trip transfer day.

Day by day
These are suggestions, not reservations: nothing here is booked for you. Check opening days and ticket availability for your own dates.
Rome
Day 1 Arrive in Rome
Transfer to your accommodation, leave luggage if the room is not ready, and take a short walk around the Aventine. Have an easy dinner and an early night. A late arrival simply means skipping the walk.
Planning note: No fixed museum booking today.
Day 2 Ancient Rome
Make the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine your main sightseeing block. Allow roughly 3–4 hours plus entry and rest breaks, and go early in summer. Keep the afternoon flexible for lunch and a rest.
Optional or alternative
- Underground or arena access is an optional upgrade, not guaranteed standard admission.
Planning note: Choose the ticket scope first.
Day 3 Vatican Museums and the old center
Allow roughly 3–4 hours for the Museums and Sistine Chapel, plus travel and security. After lunch, take a short walk through the old center to the Trevi Fountain, then pack for the train.
Optional or alternative
- St Peter's Basilica is optional and requires separate time and access checks.
Planning note: Check Sunday and holiday closures; swap Days 2 and 3 if needed.
Sorrento
Day 4 Rome to Sorrento
Roma Termini → Sorrento
Train to Naples (about 1h15), then Circumvesuviana or ferry · Allow 5–7 hours hotel to hotelTake the train from Rome to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana or a ferry on to Sorrento. This is a long day: leave Rome in the morning, allow for connections and luggage, and keep the afternoon free. Check in, then walk down to the water.
Planning note: In the summer season (until 18 October in 2026) Trenitalia sells one combined Frecciarossa plus FrecciaLink bus ticket from Rome to Sorrento, about 3 hours. Otherwise there is no through-ticket: keep the Naples connection simple with a rail ticket to Naples, then a separate ticket for the Circumvesuviana (Garibaldi to Sorrento takes 69 to 75 minutes, roughly every 36 minutes) or the ferry.
Day 5 A day on the Amalfi Coast
Take a seasonal ferry or the coastal bus along the Amalfi Coast for a day. Choose one town, such as Positano or Amalfi, rather than trying to see several, and keep the return journey in mind. This is a full day with plenty of waiting; keep it flexible.
Optional or alternative
- The Path of the Gods involves steps and uneven ground and is a different kind of day; check the route and the weather first.
Planning note: Coast ferries run to early November (weekends only in winter) and can be cancelled in rough seas; Positano is about 35 minutes and Amalfi 70 to 80 minutes from Sorrento by boat, and a return to Amalfi is about €45 to €50. The coast road is slow in summer, so give the bus extra time. On the SITA Sud coast bus (summer 2026 timetable) Amalfi to Positano takes about 40 minutes, Positano to Sorrento 45 to 60 and Amalfi to Sorrento 85 to 100; single fares from October 2026 are €2.50 from Sorrento to Positano and €3.60 from Sorrento to Amalfi, and a 24-hour ticket is €10. Check the operator's timetable for your month.
Day 6 Capri by ferry
Take a ferry from Sorrento to Capri for the day. Book a morning departure and expect queues at the ports. Keep it simple: a walk, a long lunch and a boat back. Skip anything that needs a long wait.
Optional or alternative
- A boat tour around the island is an option if the sea is calm; the Blue Grotto depends on sea conditions and has its own ticket and queue.
Planning note: Fast boats cancel first in rough seas; check the operator's notice on the day. Service is reduced in winter.
Day 7 Pompeii or a free day
Take the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii for a half day, or keep the day open for the beach and the old town. Go early, bring water and a hat, and expect uneven ground and little shade at Pompeii.
Optional or alternative
- Herculaneum is a smaller alternative on the same railway line.
Planning note: Check opening hours and the current ticket type for Pompeii before you go.
Departure
Day 8 Depart from the coast
Leave enough time for the journey from the coast to the airport or station and your airline's or train operator's recommended check-in window. This is a long morning: allow for the Circumvesuviana or the ferry and the connection.
Optional or alternative
- A last coffee in Sorrento is optional only if your departure time allows.
Planning note: This version assumes departure from Naples airport. Confirm the first service and allow a generous buffer.
Transport / practical logistics
Getting between cities and around
Count the whole journey. Outside the summer season Rome to Sorrento has no single through-ticket, so the practical journey is a train plus the Circumvesuviana or a ferry. The hotel-to-hotel allowance below is an editorial buffer, not a timetable.
| Leg | On the way | Allow in your day |
|---|---|---|
| Day 4: Roma Termini to Sorrento | Train to Naples (about 1h15), then Circumvesuviana or ferry Through-ticket only in summer (to 18 October in 2026); otherwise separate tickets | 5–7 hours Hotel to hotel |
Book the right pieces
Book the train to Naples as a normal intercity ticket, then take the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento or check the ferry timetable for your date. The Naples to Sorrento hydrofoil runs all year (five sailings a day each way, Monday to Friday only in November and December 2026); the Sorrento to Capri and Amalfi Coast boats run on a seasonal timetable (to 3 November 2026, weekends only in winter), so outside that season plan for the Circumvesuviana and buses. Compare options once your dates are settled.
Airport transfers are separate
- Arrival: This version assumes Rome Fiumicino. Choose rail or an official taxi and include the onward journey to your hotel. Allow for immigration, baggage and delays before any onward booking.
- Departure: This version assumes departure from Naples airport. Allow most of the morning for the road or ferry-and-rail journey from the coast, plus check-in and security; confirm the first service if your flight is early. Airport transport is not included in the intercity allowances.
Getting around each place
- Rome: Combine walking with the metro, buses or an occasional taxi; the Colosseum and the Vatican are on opposite sides of the city.
- Sorrento and the coast: The old town is walkable. The coast road is narrow and busy in summer, so buses and ferries can run slow, and seasonal ferries stop or reduce in winter; check the operator's timetable for your date and the day's sea conditions.
A route with less friction
Travel light, plan a station arrival buffer, and leave room for lunch on moving days. The coast has many steps and few lifts; check how your hotel's address is reached, and pack for wheeled luggage on steps.
No rental car is needed in Rome or on the coast, where parking is limited and the road is narrow. A boat excursion or private driver is optional and needs its own budget.
What to book, and in what order, is listed under Book these first.

Daily equivalent for two travelers: €309.38–€580.75 across 8 days.
What this does and does not cover
The core-sights allowance covers the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine, the Vatican Museums and the Trevi Fountain. Optional activities with their own line, already included in the totals (delete the line if you skip the activity): the Capri day (the Capri ferry line). Optional activities not priced anywhere in this budget: the Pompeii day (Pompei express ticket €20 per adult, plus the train) and the Amalfi Coast boat alternative (about €45 to €50 per adult for a return to Amalfi) and a boat tour around Capri with the Blue Grotto. Confirm the exact basket and booking fees. Premium guided tours, upgrades and private transfers may exceed these allowances.
Excluded: Flights, insurance, shopping, major alcohol spending, extra nights and excursions not listed above. Any date-specific access charge should be checked separately. Accommodation taxes are a general allowance, not a statement of municipal rates. Avoid counting taxes twice if included in your hotel quote.
Use the range as a starting point. Replace each allowance with actual quotes before booking. The low scenario requires all categories to land near their lower allowances; popular dates and central hotels can exceed the upper scenario. Arrival and departure each receive a full-day food allowance to leave some flexibility.
This is a fixed illustrative example. The Trip Budget calculator gives its own estimate for the route and choices you enter, so the two will not always match.
These allowances are editorial estimates, not quotes or live prices, built from Voyaren’s researched cost tables (compiled 19 September 2026 from 2025–2026 sources). This itinerary was last reviewed on 9 October 2026.
More about this trip
Why this route works
Rome and the Amalfi Coast are an easy contrast: a big city of long walking days, then a slower coast. This version bases the coastal part in Sorrento, which has a train line from Naples and good boat connections, instead of a cliff town that is harder to reach with luggage. Sorrento itself is not on the Amalfi Coast; the coast towns are a ferry or a bus ride away, and this plan treats them as a day out. Three nights in Rome cover the Colosseum and the Vatican without rushing.
Where to stay
- Rome: Aventine Hill. A quiet, residential hill above the Circus Maximus, a short walk from the Colosseum area. Expect hills and steps; check the walk from the nearest metro or bus stop.
- Sorrento: Sorrento. A walkable town on the Bay of Naples with a Circumvesuviana station and ferries to Capri. Sorrento is not itself on the Amalfi Coast: it is the easy gateway, and the coast towns are a ferry or bus ride away. Check the walk from the station to your hotel.
Seasonal and traveler variations
This itinerary needs no rental car. The coast road is narrow and slow in summer, and parking is limited. If you would rather sleep in a coastal town such as Positano, swap the Sorrento base in Build My Trip and re-check how you will carry luggage on the steps. With a spare afternoon, add breathing room rather than another sight.
Dates matter: No departure date is assumed. Ferries and beach services run fullest between April and October. Late spring and early fall are usually calmer and cooler than July and August; winter services are reduced. Check current schedules and ticket details before booking.
This is the standard 8-day, 7-night example. If your trip is a different length, change the nights in Build My Trip, treat any extra days as a slower pace, and review the day-by-day plan again rather than squeezing these 8 days into fewer.
Ferries and beach services run fullest April to October; the coast is much quieter and service reduced in winter. Summer is hot and crowded in Rome and on the coast.
- Honeymoon or special occasion: Choose a room with a view in Sorrento or move the coast base to a cliff town; budget more and plan the luggage on steps.
- With children: Keep the Rome sights short and treat Day 6 (Capri) or Day 7 (Pompeii) as one big outing, not both. Check ferry and ticket rules for children.
- Value-minded: Shift to a budget room band and skip the Capri ferry; the Circumvesuviana and local buses cost far less than boats.
- Winter or early spring: Ferry service is reduced and the coast is quiet; build the coast days around the train and bus, and check the weather.
