Book these first

  1. First Flights and your Venice room; check how far it is from a water-bus stop and the bridges on the way.

  3. Closer to the date Island boat timetables for your dates, especially outside April to October.

Nothing here is booked for you. Book once your dates are fixed, and check each official site for current rules and prices.

Who it suits

Couples and anyone who wants a slow, walkable city stay with a few big sights and a lot of open time.

Venice is busy at any time of year; this plan reduces crowds by staying in a quieter district and doing the big sights early, not by promising empty streets.

Day by day

These are suggestions, not reservations: nothing here is booked for you. Check opening days and ticket availability for your own dates.

Venice

4 nights Days 1–4 Stay: Castello

  1. Day 1 Arrive in Venice

    Venice · Castello Overnight: Venice

Make your way to your accommodation by water bus or on foot from the nearest stop, and leave luggage if the room is not ready. Take a short walk around Castello at the end of the day and have an easy dinner. A late arrival simply means skipping the walk.

Planning note: No fixed booking today. Count the walk from the stop to your door, including bridges.

  2. Day 2 St Mark's and the Doge's Palace

    Venice · Castello Overnight: Venice

Make St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace your main sightseeing block. Book both with entry times: a Doge's Palace ticket without a time slot only admits you from 12:00. Allow roughly 3–4 hours in all, with a rest between them, and keep the afternoon free for a long lunch and a quiet walk back through Castello.

    Optional or alternative

    • A ride the length of the Grand Canal on a water bus is a simple way to see the palazzi without a guided tour. The Pala d'Oro and the terrace over the square are separate, paid additions to the basilica ticket.

Planning note: The basilica asks for shoulders and knees covered (no very short shorts or skirts, no deep necklines, no bare feet), tickets are in a name (bring photo ID) and you should arrive within 15 minutes of your slot; paying visitors cannot enter during religious services. Backpacks and bags larger than 40 × 30 × 20 cm and all wheeled suitcases are not allowed in, and the rules can change on the basilica's ticket site. The Doge's Palace is open daily, to 19:00 until 31 October and to 18:00 from 1 November, with last admission an hour before closing; check the museum's announcements page for changes, in particular around 25 December and 1 January.

  3. Day 3 Castello with no plan

    Venice · Castello Overnight: Venice

Leave the day open. Walk the quieter streets of Castello and along the waterfront, sit down for coffee more often than you think you need to, and let lunch run long. If you want one more sight, choose a single small church or museum rather than a list.

    Optional or alternative

    • A late-afternoon boat ride is an easy way to see the city from the water without extra planning.

Planning note: This day is deliberately open. Treat it as the buffer for weather, tiredness or a late start.

  4. Day 4 The lagoon islands

    Venice · Castello Overnight: Venice

Take a boat to the northern lagoon islands. Murano and Burano are the best known; Torcello is quieter. Allow a morning or most of the day, and keep the evening free. Choose one or two islands rather than all three.

    Optional or alternative

    • The Lido is a quicker, quieter alternative: the crossing is about 14 minutes on the public water bus.

Planning note: Boat timetables change with the season and with fog or high water, so check the ACTV line 12 timetable for your date and the day's sea conditions.

Departure

Day 5 No hotel night

  1. Day 5 Depart from Venice

    Venice Overnight: none

Allow enough time for the walk and boat or bus to the airport or station and your airline's or train operator's recommended check-in window. A last coffee in Castello is optional only if your departure time allows.

    Optional or alternative

    • A last coffee in Castello is optional only if your departure time allows.

Planning note: This version assumes departure from Venice Marco Polo. Count the walk and the bridges with your luggage.

Transport / practical logistics

Getting between cities and around

Venice on foot and by boat. Venice has no cars, so the practical distance depends on bridges, steps and boat timetables rather than the map. There are no transfer days: you unpack once.

This itinerary has no transfer days: you unpack once.

Getting around Venice

  • On foot: Most of the city is walkable, but bridges, steps and crowds change the practical distance. Allow extra time with luggage.
  • Water buses: Vaporetti are the public boats. Compare single tickets with a time-based pass for the days you will actually use them; airport services have separate coverage rules.
  • The city access fee: In 2026 Venice charged day visitors an access fee on 60 listed days between 3 April and 26 July, from 08:30 to 16:00. Guests staying overnight in the municipality were exempt but had to register on the city portal and carry the exemption voucher. The fee no longer applied from 27 July 2026 and no 2027 calendar had been published when this was checked, so look at the city's page for your dates.
  • Water-bus tickets: A single water-bus ticket is valid for 75 minutes and costs €9.50; a 24-hour pass is €25, 48 hours €35 and 72 hours €45. Lagoon-island trips and the Lido are inside the same fares.

Airport transfers are separate

  • Arrival: This version assumes Venice Marco Polo. Compare the airport bus plus local transport with an airport boat service, and check how far your hotel is from the nearest stop. The ATVO bus takes about 20 minutes to Piazzale Roma; Alilaguna (€18) takes roughly 1.5 hours to San Marco. Allow for baggage and delays before any onward booking.
  • Departure: From Venice Marco Polo, compare bus plus local transport with an airport boat service. Confirm walking time, luggage practicality and the first service if your flight is early. Airport transport is not included in the intercity allowances.

A route with less friction

Travel light, plan an arrival buffer, and leave room for lunch on busy days. Check lift access at your hotel and the bridges on the way to the nearest stop, since there are very few step-free routes.

No rental car or intercity train is needed. A private water taxi, gondola ride or guided island tour is optional and needs its own budget.

What to book, and in what order, is listed under Book these first.

What this does and does not cover

The core-sights allowance covers St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace. Optional activities with their own line, already included in the totals (delete the line if you skip the activity): the lagoon island trips (the Lagoon islands line). Confirm the exact basket and booking fees. Premium guided tours, upgrades and private transfers may exceed these allowances.

Excluded: Flights, insurance, shopping, major alcohol spending, extra nights and excursions not listed above. Any date-specific access charge should be checked separately. Accommodation taxes are a general allowance, not a statement of municipal rates. Avoid counting taxes twice if included in your hotel quote.

Use the range as a starting point. Replace each allowance with actual quotes before booking. The low scenario requires all categories to land near their lower allowances; popular dates and central hotels can exceed the upper scenario. Arrival and departure each receive a full-day food allowance to leave some flexibility.

This is a fixed illustrative example. The Trip Budget calculator gives its own estimate for the route and choices you enter, so the two will not always match.

These allowances are editorial estimates, not quotes or live prices, built from Voyaren’s researched cost tables (compiled 19 September 2026 from 2025–2026 sources). This itinerary was last reviewed on 9 October 2026.

More about this trip

Why this route works

Venice is easier to enjoy once you stop trying to cover it. One quiet base for four nights lets you do the two big sights early, then spend the remaining days walking without a plan. There is no transfer day and no second hotel. Day 1 is for arriving gently and Day 5 for leaving, so there are three days for Venice itself.

Where to stay
  • Venice: Castello. A quieter, more residential part of Venice, away from the busiest streets near the Rialto. St Mark's is within walking distance. Expect bridges and steps, so check the route from the nearest vaporetto stop with your luggage.
Seasonal and traveler variations

This is a one-city itinerary. A day trip to Padua or Verona is not included; with an extra night it is a natural addition. With a spare afternoon, add breathing room rather than another museum.

Dates matter: No departure date is assumed. Fall and winter are quieter than summer, but winter brings shorter days, damp weather and the possibility of high water in the streets, and Carnevale (before Lent) is a price and crowd spike. Check current schedules and ticket details before booking.

This is the standard 5-day, 4-night example. If your trip is a different length, change the nights in Build My Trip, treat any extra days as a slower pace, and review the day-by-day plan again rather than squeezing these 5 days into fewer.

Summer is hot and very busy. Winter can bring high water in the streets, shorter days and changed island boat timetables. Carnevale pushes prices and crowds up.

  • Romantic or honeymoon: Choose a room with a canal view, add a late dinner, and keep Day 3 open. A gondola ride is optional and costs extra.
  • Quieter season: Fall and winter are usually less busy, but days are short, the weather is damp and high water can flood streets. Carnevale is a busy and expensive exception.
  • With children: Keep each day to one main outing, and check bridge and stroller access from your hotel.
  • Value-minded: Pick a budget room band, take the water bus only when you must, and use free walks for Day 3.
